What Are HFO Refrigerants?
HFO stands for Hydrofluoroolefin, a newer generation of synthetic refrigerants developed to provide significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than many traditional HFC refrigerants.
HFO molecules contain hydrogen, fluorine and carbon, with a molecular structure designed to provide suitable thermodynamic performance while reducing atmospheric lifetime and environmental impact.
Many pure HFO refrigerants have very low GWP values, while HFOs are also commonly blended with HFCs or other HFOs to create refrigerants with specific performance, safety and application characteristics.
These refrigerants are becoming increasingly important in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems seeking lower-GWP alternatives.

Because its cooling capacity differs from R-134a, compressor and system design may need to be optimized specifically for R-1234ze.
Why Are HFO Refrigerants Becoming More Important?
HFO refrigerants and HFO-based blends are becoming increasingly important as the HVAC-R industry reduces its dependence on high-GWP HFC refrigerants.
The industry is moving toward refrigerants that provide a better balance between:
- Lower GWP
- Energy efficiency
- Safety
- Refrigeration capacity
- Equipment compatibility
- Long-term regulatory compliance
Some HFO refrigerants are pure fluids, such as:
- R-1234yf
- R-1234ze
Others are blended with HFC refrigerants to achieve specific performance and safety characteristics, including:
- R-454B
- R-454C
- R-513A
- R-449A
- R-452A
Therefore, not every refrigerant containing HFO should be classified as a pure HFO refrigerant.
Many are more accurately described as HFO-based or HFC/HFO blends.
Summary
As regulations continue to reduce the use of high-GWP HFC refrigerants, HFO and HFO-based refrigerants are becoming important alternatives for the future of refrigeration and air conditioning.
Different HFO-based refrigerants are designed for different applications.
For example:
R-454B: R-410A alternative for new equipment
R-454C: Very low-GWP option for commercial refrigeration
